Dr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, Chief Executive Officer of Zoomlion Ghana Limited was last Saturday adjudged the overall Best Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 by the 2nd UT Bank Ghana Entrepreneur Awards in Accra.
The Ghana Entrepreneur Awards was to honour outstanding Ghanaian entrepreneurs for their contribution to economic growth and job creation in the country.
The event dubbed “Unleashing Entrepreneurial Capabilities to Meet the Global Challenges Of The 21st Century,” was jointly organized by Entrepreneur Foundation of Ghana (EFG), Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, and National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Deloitte and Touche.
The year’s Awards honoured 30 prominent entrepreneurs, who have exhibited superior performance that has helped them to emerge out of poverty, create jobs and added value to society.
Flanked by all the award winners, Dr. Agyepong who is also the Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies called on the government to support Local industries saying “Entrepreneurs have the solution to all the nation’s economic problems and should be supported as such.”
He called on entrepreneurs in Ghana to be united for a common cause in pushing the nation forward.
Mr Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah, Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, who represented the Vice President John Dramani Mahama, expressed Government’s willingness to promote the spirit of entrepreneurship among the youth.
He said an effective and active collaboration between companies and the universities and polytechnics to provide entrepreneurial clinics would help whip the interest of the youth in self-employment and creation of companies.
Mr. Sam Ato Gaisie, Chief Executive Officer of EFG, encouraged the youth to take up entrepreneurship to develop themselves and create jobs for others.
He asked Ghanaian entrepreneurs to strive to get to top in the 21st Century through joint partnership and other forms of capital to compete with other countries.
Others who were honoured alongside Dr. Agyepong are, Sir Sam Jonah, Executive Chairman, Jonah Capital, Mr Bhagwan Khubchandani, Chairman of Melcom Group of Companies, Mr Kimathi Mawuse Dake, CEO Jescan Constructions Limited.
Others are Mr. Edward Boateng, Executive Chairman, Global Media Alliance & Silverbird Entertainment Ghana, Salem Kalmoni, CEO, Japan Motors Group of Companies, Dr Theresa Oppong-Beeko, CEO Manet Group of Companies, Mr. William Ato Essien, CEO First Capital Plus Savings and Loans and Mr. James Ebo Whyte, CEO Roverman Productions.
The rest are Yonny Emmanuel Kulendi, Esquire, Managing Solicitor @ Law, Dr. Felix Kwaku Anyah, CEO Holy Trinity Medical & Spa Centre, Mr. Samuel Amo Tobbin, CEO Tobinco Pharmaceutical Group of Companies among others.
Dr. Siaw Agyepong, is a seasoned Ghanaian entrepreneur and Industrialist who has received many awards and honours in his career
Last January ETV, a Prime Ghanaian television station adjudged Dr. Agyepong the Most influential industrialist in 2011 following an opinion poll by the station.
On November 26, 2011, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology conferred on him an honorary doctorate degree in Literature, in recognition of his contribution to waste management and higher education in Ghana.
Under his astute leadership and business acumen, Zoomlion Ghana limited has excelled in its areas of operation in just six years since its establishment and has been awarded by several institutions, including the Government of Ghana, the Charted Institute of Marketing, Times of Africa, India and a host of others. Dr. Agyepong was also a finalist in the Ernst & Young Awards for the Masters category.
